The University of Turin (UNITO), with 27 Departments, is one of the oldest and most prestigious in Italy. The Animal Science research group is working in the experimental centre located in Carmagnola (Province of Turin, Italy) with different zootechnical animal species: rabbits, poultry, fish and insects. As regard poultry, the research topics are linked to the conservation of local slow-growing poultry breeds (Bionda Piemontese e Bianca di Saluzzo) and the evaluation of novel feed protein ingredients with low environmental impact. In the insect sector, the black soldier fly and yellow mealworm are reared in a pilot plant system. The research is focusing mainly on the evaluation of waste and by-products as growing substrate for the larvae and, for the black soldier fly, on the determination of the larvae nutritional requirements.
